Day 1: On the way to Yellowstone SOUTH Entrance
Sunday, September 7, 2025
Pearson woke up at the crack before dawn and drove us to National (DCA) at 4am. Bless him, hope he liked the chicken sandwiches Yiya made for him.
Flight DCA to Chicago (ORD) was uneventful, lost sight of Yiya only once because she’s so tiny and the herd of people around her were super-sized-adults.
Flight ORD to Jackson Hole (JAC) came with a 2 hour lay-over and delayed by a few minutes - could be worse - could have lightning and hail.
Easiest flights - ever. Picked up the Suburban, bought mom a suitcase (what did they do to it?), lunch at the Diner in town, went to the grocery store for a few items, hit the liquor store and headed north to Yellowstone. On the way, we had great view of the Tetons, saw an enormous herd of Bison, and had so many "it's so beautiful" moments.
One of the first things I noticed is that every vehicle has some form of activity attached to it: a pick up has a camper bed, a car has kayaks/boats, trucks tow larger campers or bikes with fishing rods. Everyone here is so easy going and happy - it's refreshing.
Jim drove from Jackson to the south entrance of Yellowstone. We took the Teton route and - just WOW! I understand why Hannah loves the National Parks. We have been to parks but NOTHING like this. How lucky are we to have her share this love of hers with us?
I drove from the south entrance to almost Canyon Lodge - I say alsomst because there was a little bit of weather activity - thunderstorm, lightning, and hail storm that was more like a snow storm! So violent and unpredictable.
OH! And you could literally fall off the mountain - just a sheer drop. Like 7,790 feet! The terrain is like nothing I have ever seen. I am glad we have mom with us so she can experience Yellowstone.
We crossed the Continental Divide, sat in a traffic jam while the Bison crossed the road, and What creatures! They are so big!
We finally made it to Canyon Village hours and hours after we started the day. We are beat! Time for bed!
Tomorrow is a day full of adventures and wonders.
